01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

The first dish that catches the eye at Amenbo is its signature sashimi platter. Several diners say that even the single-serving portion was surprisingly generous; one reported that an order for two was enough for four to share. Rather than ordering one portion per person, it may be worth starting modestly to leave space for other dishes. The menu lists platters for two or three, as well as a boat-shaped sashimi platter served with a hand-roll set. The boat platter is described as limited to ten a day, and a diner who ordered it found it, hand-roll set included, very substantial. It could suit a larger gathering, but consider whether sashimi is to be the main event or whether you would rather sample a range of small plates.

Fried dishes and simmered fare offer a change of pace between bites of sashimi. One diner recalled the Edo-style tempura for its crisp coating. Options on the menu include a selection of conger eel, whiting and flathead, as well as a platter of prawn, whiting, nori seaweed and four kinds of vegetables. Choose seafood-focused tempura or include vegetables, too. Tender simmered beef tendon is another dish mentioned by someone who ordered it alongside sashimi. It adds a different flavour to a seafood-centred meal. There are plenty of small plates beyond sashimi, including handmade satsuma-age fish cakes and fried rice with salted squid.

The sake list features a range of labels, with their regions and styles noted on the menu. Examples include the honjozo sake Sakata from Yamagata and Tateyama from Toyama, along with Suigei, a tokubetsu junmai from Kochi. Choosing a bottle to go with sashimi or tempura is part of the appeal. Beer and an all-you-can-drink option are also listed, so there are choices for different group sizes and drinking preferences.

Some diners say they have visited for a meal without drinking. Udon, ochazuke (rice in tea or broth) and other rice dishes appear on the menu, offering options for a dinner built around sashimi and small plates or a more meal-focused visit. The restaurant accommodates solo diners as well as groups, and reservations are recommended for dinner.
